From race cars to affordable sports cars - 100 Years of MG

MG, also known as Morris Garages, was founded in 1924 by Cecil Kimber in Oxford, England. Initially, the brand aimed to create sporty versions of Morris cars and later became famous for their lightweight, affordable sports cars. Over the past 100 years the MG Midget, MG B, The MG4 XPower and the latest addition the Cyberster have been a staple for the British-born brand.

  • Engineering

A leader in terms of engineering MG has been at the forefront of modern intelligence throughout their history. Post-war (1971) saw MG become an innovator in the supercharged sports car sector. They were developing engines and vehicles for multiple motorsport racing events which seems a world away from the MGs we see today.

  • Motorsport and Pop Culture

In its prime motorsport days, MG was a sign of top-spec British motorsport. Their advanced technology allowed them to become the thrill of driving and the standard of classic design. It had competitors such as Jaguar but one thing that always stood out was that MG placed itself in front of the people. The brand is often featured in movies, TV and even literature embedding itself further into British popular culture.

  • Something New

In the 21st century took a different perspective away from British motorsport. Their new affordable electric perspective has meant that in the last 10 years of their history MG has become a staple on roads across the world.

  • A new Chapter

MG Rover group was formed in the early 2000s and they quickly got to work. From race cars to now designing saloons for the everyday person the new line of cars inspired by Rover. This then developed further with the MG XPower SV launched in 2003 a vehicle that had that sporty style of MGs original history.

  • Back to sportier days

After the collapse of MG Rover Group, MG began production in China in 2007. The first new vehicle since the new production and change in ownership was the MG6, a saloon that also had a GT (sports) version.

  • In 2012 we saw the return of MG to touring British motorsport and beat Honda to first place in 2014’s Manufacturers championship. In the next few years, MG brought alive the cars we know today.
